چکیده

Pyrolysis and/or piranha treatment of fluorinated /ozonated single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) were found to have cut the nanotubes to short length (~100nm). Pyrolysis of partially fluorinated SWNTs (~C5F) at 700°C cut the nanotubes without causing significant crosslinking among the SWNTs. When pyrolyzed at lower temperatures, the fluorinated SWNTs need room temperature piranha treatment to finish the cutting. SWNTs that was ozonated in perfluoropolyethers (PFPE) at room temperature has also been cut when pyrolyzed at 375°C. Functionalization of cut-SWNT with alkylhalide in Li/NH3(l) was used to debundle the nanotubes into individuals in chloroform for the length measurement. The cut-SWNTs have been characterized by Raman and AFM. AFM shows cut-SWNTs with a length distribution mainly between 30nm and 100nm. Large scale cutting of SWNTs would lead to novel applications of nanotubes in microelectronics, biological imaging and sensing, drug delivery and composite material, etc.

Organometallic precursor route to carbon nanotubes*

Multi-walled as well as single-walled carbon nanotubes are conveniently prepared by the pyrolysis of organometallic precursors, such as metallocenes and phthalocyanines, in a reducing atmosphere. Pyrolysis of organometallics alone or in mixture with hydrocarbons also yields aligned nanotube bundles with useful field emission properties. By pyrolyzing organometallics in the presence of thiophene...

Surfactant-free assembling of functionalized single-walled carbon nanotube buckypapers

The electrical and textural properties of single-walled carbon nanotube buckypapers were tunned through chemical functionalization processes. Single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were covalently functionalized with three different chemical groups: Carboxylic acids (-COOH), benzylamine (-Ph-CH2-NH2), and perfluorooctylaniline (-Ph-(CF2)7-CF3). Functionalized SWCNTs were dispersed in water or ...

Direct synthesis of long single-walled carbon nanotube strands.

In the processes that are used to produce single-walled nanotubes (electric arc, laser ablation, and chemical vapor deposition), the typical lengths of tangled nanotube bundles reach several tens of micrometers. We report that long nanotube strands, up to several centimeters in length, consisting of aligned single-walled nanotubes can be synthesized by the catalytic pyrolysis of n-hexane with a...

Preparation and characterization of sulfonic acid-functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes.

A strategy for the functionalization of single-walled carbon nanotubes is reported. The synthesis involved the conversion of fluorinated single-walled carbon nanotubes to the thiolated derivative assisted by phosphorous pentasulfide. The thiol group is then quantitatively oxidized to the sulfonic acid group. The extent of oxidation of the thiol precursor is confirmed using X-ray photoelectron s...
